Moonlit huntA Poem by Aldora SparrowWritten in honor of the magnificent creatures that ride the night wind
Twilight falls, ending of another day, I feel the coolness against my face Eager, I make that wide grin, So close is the time for the chase How predictable darkness is Bringing news of the hunt to come I wake my pack who have waited Heart beating, a quickening drum A small flick of my grey muzzle points To the place where the best prey lies We run with the wind, under the pearly gaze Of the moon goddess in the dark skies Wind whistling in my black-tipped ear Heart beating in my white chest To get the biggest prey for my family Pushes me to do my utmost best The scent of wild moose drifts Into my keenly sharp nose, so sweet My azure eyes glinting, I think “Faster, onward, carry me, feet” Through the corner of my eye, I see it, The shifting movement in the trees I howl loudly to my pack-mates And the growls rung out, full of glee There the brown moose stood Its huge body large and strong But with sturdy muscles built to fight A chase would not last long A ring we formed around it Watching the fear in its eyes Unblinking, we chuckle softly Staring intently on our prize Suddenly, I give the signal Into the air, ten bodies leap Tough claws raking its flank And curved fangs sinking deep When the bloody fight was over The moose was put to an eternal rest I raise my shaggy head towards the heavens Thanking the gods for blessing our quest With our bellies full and mind calm I stand proudly atop a snowy hill I close my eyes for a moment Savoring the ending night, quiet and still So, come with us and sing That ancient song towards the moon For night is gone, away it’s fled And the golden sun is rising soon
