It doesn't add up. A really short story.

Missing Something

He hates me - I have no idea why. I haven’t done anything to him.

We were pretty close last year. Hung out. Did stuff every weekend. I thought he enjoyed my company - I enjoyed his. But since - I think it’s maybe been - since last weekend he’s acted completely cold towards me. He’s evasive, avoids eye contact, talks only in blunt statements. He never says hi to me anymore. The last time I said hi to him, when he replied ‘Hey’, I was taken aback by how confrontational he sounded. It was like how a police officer might say ‘Hey!’ to someone in the process of committing a robbery. About as friendly as a smack to the head.

I needed to ask him a favour a couple of days ago, needed to borrow a textbook. But the way his face just dropped when he saw it was me. His whole character just receded behind a mask, and when he spoke, his tone was flat... It was really unnerving, it was unlike him. It was like we’d never met before. Like I was a stranger all of a sudden.

What the hell is his problem, anyway?

You know what’s really strange is that his girlfriend doesn’t seem to have a problem with me at all. She’s actually been really nice to me since I first met her last weekend. Took to me immediately, in fact.
