Because of You ( A Poem For My Mom On Mothers Day)A Poem by PenlightMothers Day PoemYou whispered the stars into the sky at the moment of my birth and smiled despite the pain I caused you.
My first words were immortalized by your response to them and I walked because you said I could.
You showed me a love my father could not and chased away my fear of….well…everything. I can still smell that faint perfume and feel the lipstick on my face from your kisses.
I can hear in the corridors of my mind you and your Baby Grand impressing our guests at the dinner parties and dad looking from afar with affection and pride.
Your walk became mine…as did your music and the world became a song that you taught me to sing.
Christmas spent driving in the better part of the city to see the displays and to make “Silent Night” the most comforting memory in my life.
Your heart was forgiving and you never told Dad when I got caught ditching class because you knew I was sorry and that I wanted to do good.
You made me read to you while you cooked the best spaghetti on the planet carving the myth of the Bay Leaf into my impressionable mind and forging a future writer in the fires of that kitchen.
You bought me a guitar and told me that I wrote songs as good as Lennon and I believed you a thousand songs later … I still believe and because of you that’s who I am… a musician a poet a dreamer a son a restless soul with a want for love and the courage to look within.
I miss you Mom but I carry you with me in my virtue and I hear your voice in the good of my heart and I love the right way
…because of you.
Happy Mothers Day
