Where Wishes Come True

Story about a young boy and his sick mother.

In the poor suburbs of Japan lived a young boy and his sick mother. Not long after the boy was born, his father had gone away. Since then, the mother has been raising the boy all on her own. One day, the mother fell very ill. Ever since his mother fell ill, the boy took great care of her. The boy worked at a bakery with a small family. He used the money to buy food and clothing for him and his mother. He wouldn't tell her, but he was also saving money to send her to the infirmary for treatment. The boy wanted nothing more than for his mother to get better.
One evening the boy was walking home from the bakery, when he saw a group of children shouting. As the boy got closer to the group, he noticed a boy tugging on the tail of a cat. Other children were poking the cat with a stick. The boy walked towards the group of children and stood as if he was a part of their antics, and shouted "the guards are coming!"
The children quickly dropped their sticks and took off running. The boy stood next to the cat and asked, "are you alright?" To his surprise, the cat replied "I am fine now that you have saved me."
The boy, shocked, asked "do all cats speak?"
"No, for I am not a cat at all", she purred, "I am a faerie from a magical land hidden from humans. I know you have a kind heart. I can see everything inside you. You wish your mother back to health?"
To this, the boy nodded eagerly and said "I am working hard to send her to the infirmary so she can get better."
"As thanks for saving me, I shall take you to the place where wishes come true."
