Yesterdaze

A Poem by DanielScanlon
"

A poem written to my brother who is in a fight with ALS and will take him someday soon. This poem is written with references to our unique childhood on an island.

"

Yesterdaze

I wish it was yesterday, and we were GI Joes

Playing in a band, that rocked Steely Dan

In our world of happiness and who knows…

Getting on the ferry on the dining room floor

Rocking away on the Oregon beach shore

Building forts in the woods, to hang out and hide

Getting away as often, we tried

Lifting off in our own little way

As sure as I write this, I lifted that day

Flying squirrels and drinking warm beer

Rocky, Sebastian, Cricket, our Deer

John, CJ, Twig as our friends

Happy thoughts are not meant to end

Surrounded by loved ones, yourself, an Island

No matter what, your soul on the mend

Don’t ever say it can’t happen again

Just remember like brothers, like friends

You plan, and go there inside of your mind

The memories, the love, easy to find.

Now that you’ve left us, smiles and tears

You fought a brave battle amidst all of your fears

You’re a true hero to all of us here

As we hoist up a cold one, missing you: Cheers

-August 25 2013: To my brother, Tim

                 I love you

I believe losing a sibling is like losing a parent. Who else knows us from the cradle to the grave? I'd be willing to bet you cried some tears writing this. I know I did in reading it, for I lost a sibling myself. It's like a piece of you has gone with them, but a part of who they were will always be with you. All you have to do is remember - its the best way to keep his memory alive!

Heart warming tribute to a much loved brother. Lovely memories of childhood. So tough losing a sibling. Lost my younger brother seven years ago. Still hurts like hell. Thank you for posting.

Losing a loved one is tough to take. The pain is always somewhere inside even many years later. This is a great tribute to your brother. I'm sure somewhere he's raising a glass right along with you.
