One Minute Chapter Two: Night Time MemoriesA Chapter by DoormanDanOne Minute: Chapter Two Night Time Memories The time it took for Drake to drive from the place he worked to his house was, on average, 25 minutes. For the universe as a whole, that amount of time isn't even long enough to blink an eye, but to Drake, after his altercation with Ashley, it felt like an eternity. He realized that when one gets angry, he/she doesn't feel the weight of their actions until he/she has calmed down completely. Well, here he was, calmed down, and now the weight was slamming into him like a school bus. As Drake pulled into the dirt and gravel driveway of his abode, he took a shallow sigh of relief, "Home sweet home..." He thought. The house he lived in was a single story building that was obviously meant to be occupied by only one person. The outside was painted a pale green, and the framework around the windows was a pleasant light blue. The front porch wasn't very impressive either; the stairs leading up to it were just dull, gray pieces of stone, and the wooden railings looked like they had seen better days. The only appealing feature of the almost depressing front porch was the door, which was a beautiful shade of purple, and appeared to have never once been touched by the rough hands of the elements. Having parked his car, Drake turned the automobile off and hopped out of it. During the short, unexciting walk from the car to the porch, something caught the young adult's eye. In the middle of the luscious, emerald green grass of his front yard was a small, circular garden. Well, it would be a garden, if there were actually any plants in it, but instead, there was only dirt. Drake had always meant to plan something there, but had never gotten around to doing it. Taking his mind off the sore sight, he walked up the porch, pulled out his house key, and unlocked the front door. The interior of the house was a bit more lively than the exterior, but it still wasn't anything like Buckingham Palace, or any palace for that matter. The walls were coated in a light yellow, and every room in the house(with the exception of the bathroom and kitchen) was covered in silver-gray carpeting. Like the outside of the building, it wasn't anything spectacular, but it was still home sweet home to Drake. The black haired young adult took another heavy sight as he thought of his argument with his best friend once more. The feeling of regret was still burning hot in his veins like a hyper nova, but his actions were justified, weren't they? After all, Ashley had crossed the line by mentioning his mother. He was certain that anybody else would have done the same thing, but for some weird reason, he was still wondering whether or not he had overreacted. Why? The more Drake thought about it, the more stressed he became. Finally, he ruffled his hair and groaned loudly in frustration: he needed to vent, and he needed to vent NOW. Without waiting another second, Drake swiftly walked through the house and to his room. There wasn't much of anything about the room that differed from the rest of the house aside from there being a small TV, night-stand, bed, and a case in it. The young man headed straight over to the case and picked it up, "There you are." He said to himself. With the case in his hand, Drake left his bedroom and walked to the back door of his house. In the region of Ohio that Drake lived, there was mostly nothing but miles of road and country side. There weren't very many buildings around to produce light pollution whatsoever. As a result, the view in the night sky was something truly fantastic. The darkness was being illuminated by what had to be thousands upon thousands of little specks of red, blue and pale white light. The stars, sitting up in their cosmic thrones, were almost like the Wil O' the Wisps that many people claimed roamed throughout the Earth; they didn't seem like much from a distance, but up close, they shined even brighter than the hopes and dreams of an innocent, five year old boy. And in the middle of the spectacle, flowing across the mystic fabric of space like water in a stream, was the Milky Way. The sight was living proof of the mind boggling size of the universe. As if to make the celestial sight even more magical, a meteor streaked right across the sky in a thin, bright needle of light. After a minute, he finally managed to tear his eyes away from the ethereal view, and placed the case on the ground. With a flick of his hand, he unlocked the case and opened it, revealing its contents. Inside there was just one thing; a violin. This wasn't just any violin though, it was his mother's violin, which had been given to him when he was just ten years old. The instrument was almost as beautiful as the sky above; the scroll of the violin was a rich chocolate color, the fingerboard was completely black, almost as if somebody had cut a piece out of the cloth of midnight, and just glued it on the violin, and the body was a deep, dark, almost hypnotizing shade of blue. The instrument was, without a doubt, out of this world; but the most dazzling part of it had to be the quartz crystal decorations that surrounded its f-holes. Nothing else on the planet could have compared to the instrument's stunning beauty. Smiling Slightly, Drake picked up the violin and boy, made sure it was tuned, and rested his chin on the chinrest. What happened next was truly magnificent. The black haired boy began to play what had to be one of the most pleasant, soothing and wonderful instrumentals ever. He didn't even seem to be thinking about anything as he moved with the music perfectly. As he got further into the ear pleasing piece though, his eyes began to water. Soon, tears were flowing down his face in little rivulets. The violin and the song reminded him of his mother; his dead mother, the one who use to sing lullabies by his bed at night when he was a little boy. She also taught him how to play the violin. The last song she taught him before the plane crash was the one he was currently playing. But still he played on and on, completely unaware of the many minutes that were sailing by. Drake was also unaware of the meteor shower taking place above his head. The only things that were on his mind were the violin, the song, his mother, and every single moment they had together. He finally ended the song 30 minutes later. Wiping the tears off his face, Drake gently placed the instrument back in it's case, and went back inside the house to go to sleep. The night may have still been fairly young, but to him, it was done. A few minutes later... Drake all but dived into his bed. Resting his head on the pillow, the young man thought about everything that had transpired within the last few hours. The argument with Ashley, him losing his temper, and the memories of his mother all conspired to keep him from drifting into the arms of sleep. He didn't know what he was going to tell his best friend tomorrow morning; should he go or not? That question was a lot harder to answer than it should have been. Eventually though, despite the many thoughts raging in his mind, Drake began to doze off. The last thing he mumbled before exhaustion got the better of him was, "Do I make you proud mom?" At long last, everything went black. Suddenly, a voice echoed in Drake's head. It was the clear, beautiful, resonating voice of a woman. "It's time to break out of your cocoon Drake." The voice said. As the voice finished, there was a huge, bright flash of light, and then everything went dark again. Drake didn't know anything of the huge adventure ahead of him that was going to change who he was forever. © 2015 DoormanDanAuthor's Note
