Black InkA Poem by DoormanDanMy attempt at honoring Edgar Allan PoeBlack Ink Once upon a midnight dreary, I was feeling weak and weary
My spirit was trapped in the realm of twilight
But out of the dark you came, my dying soul you saved
You told me, “Follow me to escape the white light”
Very soon I had one of those hearts comprised of puppet parts
Without question, I’d do whatever you say
But when Death reared himself a throne, you left me to come apart
Do you remember me, the one that you betrayed?
I am the raven Nevermore, the one knocking on your door
Can you hear my heart beating underneath the floor?
I am the black ink tainting your fountain of dreams
I am the guilt locking you in restless sleep
Hello Montresor, remember me from oh so long ago?
I am the immortal ghost of Fortunato
It is good to see you again, my dearly beloved friend
Tell me, how has your lonely life been?
I hope that it has been good, that you’ve seen many a wood
Because I am about to take you to dreamland
I am the black ink tainting your fountain of dreams
I am the guilt locking you in restless sleep
You will find no solace in this haunted palace
My memory won’t be lost within your past
Take this kiss upon the brow! I will never let you out
Until Death comes in that poisonous wave
Only when the sun kisses you goodnight
Will I let you rest peacefully for the first time
Until then let’s play hide and seek in your mind
This is the price you pay for your crime
I am the black ink tainting your fountain of dreams
I am the guilt locking you in restless sleep
Forever you’ll wage this battle, sending messages in bottles
Until your bones grow old, weak and brittle
