Belated Birthday Blues

Belated Birthday Blues

A Poem by Danielle Calhoun

BELATED BIRTHDAY BLUES

I never asked to be in this place
I only asked for a son to raise

The place where I am
It’s not all that fun

Caught between

Wanting a man
And being a mom

You have no reason
To feel guilt or shame

You don’t have
Those feelings now

But I fear you will
Some day

I love you more
Than any man on earth

You are my son
God gave me you

But now I’m thirty
And feeling more
At a loss

Wondering when
Mister Right will come along

I know that you are young
But I fear the day

When someone comes my way

Will you love him
Or chase him away

Will he love us both
Or want you out of the way?

I know not the answers
To the things that I ask

For now I will leave it all
In God’s hands
