A Letter to my Grandmother

A Letter to my Grandmother

A Poem by Danielle Calhoun

A LETTER TO MY GRANDMOM

Grandmom, please don’t go away.
Grandmom, I want to see you stay.
I want you to be there when I get married.
I want you to be there when I have my first child.
I know in life, people must go,
But Grandmom " not you, not yet.

It has been almost five years,
Since I saw you last.
Grandmom, I need someone to dry my tears.
My life is hell,
And that you are aware of.

Grandmom, I promise never to give up.
I called you yesterday,
But you were not there.

Grandmom, please don’t give up.
You’re brave and strong, as I know I should be.
Grandmom, please stay, but not just for me.
There’s my brother and sister and my niece, too.
And Mom and Dad,
Though our words have been few.

Grandmom, I love you more than you will ever know.
Grandmom, please don’t go…

Love,
Danielle

My Grandmother died May 14, 2011 (2 days after my 33rd birthday). I miss her deeply, but this poem shows the struggles we faced long before her passing.
