Roses

Roses

A Poem by E.R. Sweeney

Your elegance is unmatched,
But by your charm.
A deadly charm, and so a deadly beauty,
Which has captivated me?

Your eyes sparkle with joy,
When I cry out in pain.
I’m but a plaything,
That brings you amusement through its sorrow.

Fate, that’s what you are.
My own fate staring at me in malice.
You’ll never be happy until my demise has been met.

With every breath,
I am aware that I am one closer to my death.
Every time you speak to me,
I know what you say is a lie.

A sweet lie, bitter though to the core,
Which I can’t help but fall for.

Breathing in, I glance upon you.
How can you sleep so soundly?
It’s not my choice what you do,
But I hope that you’ll not break me.
