An HourglassA Poem by Dan HerahBrown sand slowly running
down the hourglass, moving faster than tears. The
brown particle grabbed other particles pulled down fearing the
bottom. A whirlpool pulled the drowning particle. Squeezing through the
connecting tube, lost between other brown
particles, hurrying to the bottom. A one way down to earth. Bound
by fragile glass, surrounded by identical particles. The particle suspended
hopelessly fell from the connecting tube. Pushed and shoved by other
particles, flapping phantom wings, it stopped moving altogether.
It fell faster, its heart
skipping beats produced by other particles landing onto the hard bottom.
It fell onto the pile of other particles, tumbling down. Hands stretched out grabbing onto others,
tumbling down. It reached rock bottom, other
particles stepping on it. Slowly losing its breath, losing life, it gave up. Its world shaking, other
particles screaming, the hourglass was turned
upside down. The unguided particle staggered, pulled from the bottom to the
top once again, brown sand slowly running down the hourglass. © 2015 Dan Herah
