Hope

Hope

A Poem by Dante Balsote

This stubborn child sings with her spread-out midnight wings. Look here, she stands on a springboard. Look there, she soars! Oh how she silences the lions' roars!

"But isn't she a fool? Oh isn't she a fool? To be far from our merry-making days and beside us after our sorrowful ways! Look at how the fool sings with her spread-out midnight wings!"

She is a fool. Look at this child sway as if doing a ballet. Look at her swing on a swing. Look at her being without your own remorseful trembling.

"The fool! Look at her! Look at her! How come she can skate on this very thin ice and never dies?"

Look at her brother, sad, pitiful, forlorn, looking terrible with clothes torn and says, "Thank you Hope for being stubborn."

As long as hope is pure and honest, hope is the one stubbornness I can deal with.
