A Poem by Daniel Dunlap

I didn’t plan on waking up

Next to you.

I didn’t think your hands on my chest

Would push my heart into my skull

And shake me from sleep.

My plans were laid out

In cold simplicity like a naked mattress.

I couldn’t see your eyes in the dark,

But I imagined them open.

I imagined seeing your plans in them,

And you tangled within

As in blankets.

I imagined stealing them from you

To roll you back to me.

The clock says something like three or five.

My chest says it needs to be refilled by sunrise

When your mouth will say

You’re late for work.

But the gray daylight

Will only bring my heart to rest in my throat.

Ah, great imagery again. I can almost feel my heart caught in my own throat, breath stalled to a halt. Simple, but again, lovely.
