day five

day five

A Poem by Dana Alsamsam
"

writing a poem every day over my long winter break

"

tear your ravenous canines

into the cotton candy suburbs

and relish the melt-in-your-mouth

sweetness that sticks to your palms

unlike the bitter dark chocolate

that graces your childhood taste buds.

you feel your arteries clogging

at the utter childish simplicity

that you will forever wish you enjoyed.

you trade in caffeine or nicotine buzzes

for the sticky gel of sugar rush

that turns your veins pink

and leaves you immobile

in its stepford wake of color wheel

turning and merry-go-round churning.

why has youth lost its sparkle?

this reminds me of my folks and the transitions into old age they have experienced. they are in their 90's now...can't get enough salt or sugar...
maybe it is those childhood taste buds.
