The Quiet WorldA Poem by Dana Alsamsam(In the stylings of Jeffrey McDaniel who wrote another poem called The Quiet World)In an effort to get people to listen To the dying art of talk radio, And also to appease the deaf, The government has decided To ban music of all kinds Within country borders. My violin whimpers in the corner Wishing for a human hand, the only Thing that can make it beautiful. I tell the piece of wood To quiet itself, this is a new world. In the car I drive without music. Slowly I strip my closet of color. Take the artwork off of the walls. I shower in lukewarm water. I no longer put sugar in my tea. On the television I only watch news.. I stare and smile. Empty. I am adjusting well to the new way. Late at night I lie in bed, And wait for the thoughts that cage Me in wakefulness, but lately I feel them Whisper past me like smoke, And watch blankly as the thoughts Slip out of my ears to go live On their own. And without music, the thoughts That have left will never Come back home.© 2013 Dana AlsamsamReviews
