That's What It Took

That's What It Took

A Poem by Dana Ferguson

Mindless, driving and singing,
checking his phone out of boredom.
Digging and planting flowers,
she's decorating the town greeting sign.
He's got a message and needs to read it,
he goes to type a response.
She stops to look at people driving through,
waving as they go by.
He needs to write a long message,
he thinks it needs more explaining.
She looks back at her flowers,
sees something in the corner of her eye.
He looks up and sees he's gone off the road,
a girl is standing in front of the car.
She moves,
not quick enough.
She's gone,
he's there.
He sits in shock and cries.
He'll never do that again.
That's what it took.
A life.

Strong story telling skills. Gripping and painful. Your word choice was simple, but i feel like that added to the over all feel of this piece. great Job keep it up
