Innocence

Innocence

A Poem by Liam

I've let this go too far.
Now I can't get back to my mountain.
Never again will I see snowy tip and lay in it's pillowed safety.
I've fucked it up for us, my mountain and I.
I won't see the city lights from on high;
I won't see the moving valleys down below.
I've done it all wrong.
I've become different;
Poisoned and I can only blame myself.
I was once a beautiful sight to look up at,
Now I'm the scraggly rocks that line this great mountain.
They've tried to climb up but I've pulled them down into silence.
The bears that used to travel around the meadows,
They now fill the former empty spaces of my mighty mountain's neighbors.
Nothing is left, nothing is left.
The colors which used to define the slopes now are dull and full of pain.
There were rivers that ran down for miles and miles.
They've dried up now and left the desert in their place.
Pine trees that flourished now lay bare,
Their broken brown needles resting at their feet.
No joyful songs fill the echoes.
They fall silent in reverence of what is now gone.
I'm even sorry for what I've left here to be seen by everyone but I vow to mend it.
I vow to cry out moisture onto the dead fields.
I'll find new soil to plant the saplings.
I'll call upon my clouded judgement to bring snow back to my beloved mountain.
I'll carve a staircase up my swollen pride so I can see down to the valleys again.
I'll direct the furious water to the streams to reflect my faults.
They will smooth them over like a calm pool.
The wildlife will return and leave loneliness behind forever.
I will sing louder and louder.
A feverish fervor that only one who has seen death and beauty together can manage.
I won't let you die again, little mountain.
Smooth those cliffs over so I can breath again in your safety but,
Please, don't let my despair drag me in again.
