DownfallA Story by Suppressed Minds
As I lie in bed awake, thoughts ran through my mind. Memories really. Of my childhood, my past. Just about everything. Even the slight sounds of voices I would hear call my name. These thoughts, they kept me from sleeping for some strange reason. Little did I know that there was more to it than a dark night of looking at the ceiling unable to rest.
Hours went by and the sun had begun to rise over the hills. The light shinning in through the window, blinding my as I looked toward it. I lie in bed for another hour in hope that I would fall asleep and finally decided to give up and start my day. As I sat up, the phone rang and I looked over, waiting for the caller ID to show. The phone rang a second time and the caller ID showed. My sister had called the night before and it was her name that once again showed on the phones screen. "Hello?" I said as I answered the phone. There was a loud shriek and I held the phone away from my ear for a brief moment before I put it to my ear again. "Charlie! Your late you need to hurry." She said in excitement. "Late for what?" I asked curiously. "I'll tell you when you get down here. I'm waiting outside." "Alright, I'll be down in a few minutes." I hung up the phone and got out of bed, still curious about what she was taking about. I got dressed and came downstairs to open the door for her. As the door opened she threw confetti in the air. "Happy Birthday Charlie!" She yelled as she hugged me and came inside. She was holding a small cake in her hands and had been wearing a floral sun-dress and heels. "Thank you" I responded as I closed the door behind her. "You don't have to work today do you?" "I do actually, I was getting ready to head out when you called." She set the cake down on the table and looked back over at me. A bit upset that I had to go to work. "Well then, I guess we'll have to wait till you get home to celebrate it then." She said as she walked towards the door. "Yeah, hopefully my boss will let me come home early today. Can't imagine spending another birthday at work." I grabbed my keys off the hook and followed her out the door, locking it behind us. "I probably shouldn't keep you much longer then. I'll call you when you get off." She said as she walked over to her car and opened the door. "Alright, I'll see you then." I responded as I got into my car and closed the door. I waited for her to back out of the driveway before I started my car and watched her as she waved and drove away. I pulled out of the driveway after her and headed in the opposite direction towards town, hoping to get to work on time. As I drove down the, street I began to feel drowsy. I shook my head to keep myself awake and yawned as I drew closer to the intersection. I blinked for a brief moment and dozed off as the car continued moving. I opened my eyes when I heard a loud horn of a truck but, it was already to late. Within seconds, I had driven into the intersection and slammed into an oncoming garbage truck. I remember anything after that. I had been knocked unconscious on impact. Before I knew it, I was in the hospital and my sister had been sitting beside my bed holding my hand. I could feel the light touch of her hand as I lie there and tried to open my eyes. I had no luck but, was able to grasp her hand to get her attention. "Charlie?" She said in a faint voice, relieved to feel my hand lightly begin to grip hers. I opened my eyes a little and looked over at her, unable to speak and smiled. She smiled back as a tear rolled down her cheek, unable to say anything further. We stared at each other smiling, saying nothing as we waited for the doctor to come in the room. After a few minutes, the doctor was at the door. He peer in and motioned my sister to come outside. She looked over at him and nodded and stood up. As she walked out of the room she looked back at me flashing a smile as tears began to form in her eyes. She went outside the room and shut the door behind her. I watched them as they exchanged words for a few moment's. My sister shook her head in disbelief as the doctor told her the news. She came back into the room and told me the news. I couldn't make out a single word she had been saying but I new it was bad. I could feel my heart begin to slow as she hugged me, fighting back her tears and within moments time, everything went dark. My heart had stopped beating and I took my last breath. It was my twenty-third birthday and I had died in the hospital after falling asleep behind the wheel. It would now be remembered as a tragic ending to another life left unfulfilled. © 2015 Suppressed Minds |
