Those were the only sounds that resounded in his head. How long has it been? No one could tell; it was all muscle memory at this point.
It’s just a nightmare. I will wake up soon. Stacks upon stacks of paperwork piled on his desk. He leaned on his elbow which in turn was parked firmly on his work desk. An ornate sign was the only thing that broke the black and white color scheme. It read “Leon Wong " Clerk, Deposit and Bank Transactions”
Leon let out a deep sigh as he stared blankly into his computer screen. Screw this place. They didn’t even have the decency to give him a proper cubicle. Right as he started to reimagine, as he would over and over again, the destruction of this evil facility, his heart sank as he heard the combination of the two most despicable voices he could ever hope to hear resonating in deafening unity.
“Hey Leon buddy! Look, I am kind of feeling under the weather right now, you know; it’s been going around for weeks. Could you maybe, you know, cover me for the day? That would really help loads.” It was Chong or better known as A*s Twat. F****r’s been doing this all year. Leon knew he wasn’t for real, but he was a charismatic fellow and the boss literally wants to suck him off. It was tough times.
And as if the timing was carefully and intricately pre-organized, the coup de grace came through:
“Leon! What is with this report? I can’t bloody use this! You know what this is? A steaming heap of rubbish. That’s what. I want this redone RIGHT this time and on my desk in 30 minutes! Why can’t you be more like Chong over there? He’s got the spirit and performance to back it up-“
Leon didn’t bother to listen to the rest, just a few words protruding out and reiterating in his head. Failure. Liability. Futureless. Yet another day at the office. It usually doesn’t bother him much, but it has started to add up these days. But he always had his family to consider; they weren’t doing too well. And so once again, he gritted his teeth and continued on with the droning.
It was already ten at night when Leon finally stood up shaking. Today was especially stressful and he knew only one way of dispensing justice. It’s time to log on….
Leon didn’t know when he picked up the instinct. He just wanted to kill. Vent all that frustration out. Prove he wasn’t a failure; that he could still do something well. Bodies upon bodies rained down upon the Great Plains in his wake.
Tonight’s haul was good. 162 successful frags, 0 survivors. Leon beamed as the statistic tracker updated on his console. His 10,000th player kill; a new milestone. He glanced at his virtual clock; 3 am. It is probably time to get ready to return to the nightmare. Leon sighed as he scrolled the virtual holographic menu and selected ‘log off’. His eyes closed, he didn’t want to see the Other World fade as he would for the real one. The console counted down the log off timer, each second cutting deep into Leon’s heart. 5,4,3,2,1-
Silence. Nothing changed. Leon opened his eyes in surprise; he was still in the Other World. Leon tried and retried the same exit procedure but to no avail.
“Insanity is when you try to do the same thing again and again but expect different results.” A voice sounded.
Leon whirled around. It was another player.
“Well are you going to kill me too?” she smiled. © 2016 Rainbows Butterflies And Happy Endings |
