A Mental BreakdownA Chapter by Jenny-Jen-JenI'm on an update high for this book now. I'll try to post again tomorrow seeing as it's a snow day!!
CHRISTOPHER “Did you hear?” Jason interrupts my quiet, thoughtless mind as we lock the Coffee Hut doors for the night. “Hear what?” My voice sounded acidic, even to me. It came out in rough spurts, unevenly and cold. “Isabella is in the hospital.” His voice was even, calm and almost casual.
My heart sunk at the thought. “Why?” I asked, after a few moments passed. I leaned on the counter, clutching it, as if I, myself, might crumble if I didn’t have the support. “Mental breakdown or something?” It sounded more like a question than an answer.
I remembered the last moments I’d seen her. She was struggling against her emotions, her pain, just talking to me and I’d left her. I close my eyes, and try to remember to breathe. I realize now how much she needs me. Not only that, it has gotten to the point that I need her just the same.
“Are you feeling alright?” Jason’s voice was so distanced. He didn’t know the half of it. I focused on his eyes and he looked concerned. “Fine.” I muttered as the images of Isabella, my Isabella in a hospital surrounded by doctors who couldn’t help her pained my thoughts.
Jason kept quiet for a while, but then I began to notice his sighs and grunts. He had been watching me, my expressions. I knew it the moment I looked at him. “You’ve fallen for her, haven’t you?” He asks, assuming correctly. I look away, trying not to play defense, knowing it wouldn’t help to deny what I already knew.
I wanted her, all of her. I wanted to be the one she could rely on, the one who could pick her up, piece by piece and make her whole again. I wanted to be in her life, no matter how hard that may be, how much pain that would involve, I wanted it.
I met Jason’s eyes, expecting disapproval, but instead he had a small, smug smile across his face. It met his eyes lightly, and he nodded. “She needs you.” Was all he said as he walked towards the office, to finish up what he needed to do for the night.
My mind raced back to Isabella, and the images of her in a hospital now only angered me. She’d be better off with me. I could take better care of her. And maybe, just maybe, she’d trust me again. Without stopping to think about it, I was out the door, in the cold wintry weather.
My feet sunk deep into the snow as I began to run. I ran as fast as I could through the blizzard like storm to my car, just a small distance away from the café. As soon as I was inside, my keys were in the ignition. I didn’t know what I was going to say, or do, but I knew where I was heading. For me, that was enough.
The drive to the hospital was longer than I had hoped, but I got there in one piece. After the driving I had just done, I thought it was best I appreciated the fact I was still alive. I near sprinted into the lobby and found the receptionist.
“Can I help you sir?” She was very polite and smiled at me with her baby blue eyes. I didn’t focus on much else as I spoke. I’m not even sure what I asked for, but before I knew it, she was giving me a room number. “412” She smiled. “Good luck.” The added message was taunting. An edge of humor was in her voice. It was as if I had missed the punch line to a good joke.
I ignored her and followed the hallways until I found Isabella’s room. I was greeted by a doctor. His skin was whiter than the snow outside and his hair was platinum blonde. He stood out, and I was almost positive every nurse in this hospital was irrevocably in love with him.
His smile faded when he saw me, but his expression was not one of disgust or disappointment. He looked curious, and hopeful. “Christopher?” He asked, forcing me to stop in my tracks. My eye brows creased as I studied the doctor. How did he know me?
“Son, is that your name? Are you here to see Isabella?” He asks, his smile returning, welcoming me in a way. I nod, as I walk forward once more. “Is she okay?” I ask and he nods. “In due time. Will you be caring for her?” He asks, looking over some paper work he has in his hands.
I feel dumbfounded by his questions. “You are the boyfriend right?” The doctor asks me. I open my mouth but no words will follow my instincts to correct him. “I assume you know her parental status.” His eyes flicker to mine and he sighs. “Are we going to need to get you checked in too?”
I flinched at his sudden haste but otherwise glared at him. “Am I allowed to take her back to her dorm?” I ask, ignoring his previous question. “In this case, you’ll have to get the adult in charge of her to sign her out, but as long as you do that, she will be allowed to leave.” He verified.
I nodded, looking towards her room. “You may go see her, if you want. She’s awake.” He says, noticing my urgency. I don’t even bother to look back at him as I walk in, ready to fight my way back into the heart of the girl who steals away my every breath. © 2009 Jenny-Jen-JenAuthor's Note
