A Look Around

A Look Around

A Poem by Ben Taylor

He rakes the stubble on his cheeks
With hastily trimmed nails.
He gnaws his lower lip and
Glances out the nearby window,
Contemplating the elusiveness
Of contentment
As fireflies flicker in the
Deepening dusk.
They sputter out,
One by one,
And the night becomes, suddenly,
Incredibly lonely.

I love that you can just take one simple, seemingly average moment and turn it into something brilliant like this.

Captures, quite well, that anxious emptiness we often feel when lonely.
Sad and dark are also almost always associated with loneliness.
A strong, very impressive piece of poetry, Ben.

A strong poem. Description led reader to a lonely place. I like the flow of thoughts and the good ending to the poem. Thank you for sharing the excellent poem.
