Consume And Collapse

Consume And Collapse

A Poem by Ben Taylor

'Round the smold'ring embers,
Shadows flicker softly--
Barely now remembered.

Once a passion burning,
Somehow falt'ring, fading,
Leaving wet-eyed yearning.

Flames that licked the starlight,
Dimming now to nothing,
Failure turning forthright.

Bitter ashes stagnate,
Wallow in self-pity;
Sadness whispers, "Check-mate,"

Nothing left but darkness
Lapping at the charcoal--
Sick, corrosive, heartless.
