Caught My Eye

Caught My Eye

A Poem by Ben Taylor

The sun is burning in the center of the horizon.
When I look away, nothing else is bright enough
To be seen through the spot bleached into
My retinas.
I don't mind, really.
That's how it should be--
I know nothing is as brilliant,
As blindingly beautiful or
As effulgent and radiant, as
The gentle glow of the setting sun,
So why should I wish to cast my gaze
On anything else?
Some would argue that I squander my youth
By not absorbing the other pleasant sights
That no doubt surround me;
I cannot say for sure,
One way or another.
I do know, however, that when I shift
My eyes until the image fades from the
Inside of my eyelids, my exuberance
Falters and fades.

A man's gotta go with what most inspires or sustains him. (Of course, "the setting sun" could have other, less positive, meanings.)
This piece is a pleasure to read, Ben--well done in all ways.
"Caught My Eye" ranks among the best poems you've ever written.
Exceptional work, young poet!
