Throb Of Distance

Throb Of Distance

A Poem by Ben Taylor

These impossibly thin wires
Of nostalgia
That bind us one to
Another,
At the simplest note of
Remembered song
Or frankly uttered phrase
Will shiver with regret:
A steady throb of longing,
Beating as if
It were a fist of denial
On the memory-bloodied doors
Of the irretrievable past.
At the slightest provocation,
These strands of the unforgettable
Constrict within my chest,
Painfully accentuating the division
Of that which has passed
And that which will never again
Come to pass.

An image-rich, decidedly melancholy offering crafted with poetic precision by a budding master of the art.

I particularly like the image in this poem, because i too used to think of all my connections with the past as thin threads that would independently tug at me to recall individual memories... if that makes sense. This poem obviously goes a lot deeper than that, drawing on other fine metaphors and recreating both physical and emotion sensations. This is brilliantly expressive:

"A steady throb of longing,
Beating as if
It were a fist of denial
On the memory-bloodied doors"

An effective and meaningful poem. Well-crafted!

I'm adding this to my library. There's only 2 other poems there, and i think this might be the best one there. Double thumbs up.

Very nice! At the simplest note of/Remembered song - how true it is that it only takes one note. Suddenly you have replayed entire dramas of relationships and relived rollercoasters of experiences before the verse even begins.

Minor suggestion - what about removing "that" from line 3? These impossibly thin wires/Of nostalgia/Bind us to/Another,... I think it puts a little more emphasis on the action of the wires - on the binding. Just an opinion.

Thanks for sharing.

You really have captured the pain of "nostalgia" combining wih the precipice-point of now. A very emotive poem.
