The screen's flicker Draws my eyes From the dust Circulating my hotel Room. This altar of static Consumes my Inspiration; My entreaty To Euterpe Is forgotten. With windows closed And curtains drawn I watch the world Portrayed through Fake realities while Irretrievable time Wastes away. As my insatiable Lust For banalities Allows itself to be Temporarily exhausted, My now polluted Eyes close, The sludge Of paltry Entertainment Corrupting my Dreams.
A Zen Master (they would probably prefer, "zen master") might say, "You may not always be doing what you should be doing, but you are always doing what you must be doing."
While we're asking questions, Ben, see what you can do with this: "Sometimes, even context has to be put into context." Some guy once said that to me and I didn't think my "oh yeah!" comeback would quite have won me a seat at the Algonquin.
"The Looking Glass" is wonderful in conception and perception--and up to your usual high standard. It was a pleasure to read.
The things we find ourselves spending our time on! Though, sometimes it seems like a waste of time, but its often the "insatiable /Lust / For banalities' that leads to great inspiration; i'm sure many scientific discoveries have been made in such moments... other times it's just an essential need to relax from deep thought.
I actually like the sound and flow of it. This would make great spoken word. Personally, I would like to see circulating on it's own line, followed by "my hotel room" all on one... but that is triviality. I feel as though you broke that line for emphasis. If so, I would be curious to know the reason. At any rate... this is a great piece. I love the use of the words sludge, paltry, and banalities. Alter of static is genius.
The image of you sitting mind numbed in front of a television in a hotel was very clear and might I add depressing. I'm not finding anything that stands out that makes it feel disjointed or throws the flow of it off. Actually it feels like it pulls a person right into the room with you. Television is stultifying. I like this and think you did a great job.
