Lost

Lost

A Poem by Ben Taylor

The massive black hole that holds our galaxy together
resides constantly in the back of my mind.
I can't help but imagine it's infinite reach,
it's soft but inexorable grasp
on all things.
And if it were to vanish,
how critical orbits would unravel,
how the lack of cohesion,
the utter nothingness,
would propagate across all space
at light speed;
that monolithic gravity vanishing
as we all begin drifting
among constellations that will soon
lose their form.

You have vanished.

You held me together.

My heart has begun to drift wildly out of orbit,
and the stellar scenery is beginning to shift
disturbingly.
I am lost without the familiar star structures,
patterns that I have been using to navigate for years now.

I will have to learn it all anew,
somehow,
without you.
