Eyes on the Past

Eyes on the Past

A Poem by dabblingrosalie
"

Trying to be with someone when you're still caught on what cannot be.

"
His eyes were on her.
Her eyes were on the world.
He was taken by her smile.
She was caught up in the past.

He thought about their love shared.
She cried about a love lost.
He dreamt of their future together.
She yearned for what used to be.

They looked into each other eyes,
Whispered "I love you" on a stolen night
But she was not free.

The crushing weight of letting go,
Accepting what could not be,
Seeing what was right in front of her,
Left her tormented, guilty.

For how can one look into the eyes of another
When they are still caught, trapped,
By what is no longer there.

Really nicely done poem, with the back and forth motion of two people in different places in their lives. My only suggestion would be to use less periods at the end of the sentences because it stills reads smoothly without them :) thanks for sharing this!
