A Poem by Cynthia Gelinas

My white knuckles grip

So tightly to the edge

Desperate not to fall

Head over heels again

I can’t let go

Of the world I know

When I’m not so sure

Of where I’m going

It’s not easy

To give you all of me

When I trusted you before

And you got greedy

I need to know

You’re not the same

That this won’t be over

As quickly as you came

There was a time

When this was easy

But you were smiling

As you were lying to me

And I could’ve spent my life

Wrapped up in you

But now things have changed

And I don’t know what to do

Before I was blind

But now I can see

And I’m not so sure

I like what’s in front of me

Are you even real?

Or a ghost of what you were?

It’s going to be hard to trust you

Since you lusted after her

I don’t know how we got here

Why I didn’t walk away

But I’m hanging in this limbo

And for now I’m here to stay

I can’t say that I’m happy

I can’t say I’m not confused

This would be so much easier

If I didn’t feel quite so used
