An Ordinary Day

An Ordinary Day

A Chapter by Cynthia

The man looked at me and dropped his bags. He turned and ran down the street. I sprinted after him and managed to catch him before he got halfway. I tackled him to the ground and heard a satisfying thump as he hit the ground, unconsious. I sat on top of his chest just in case he woke up and whipped out my cellphone, pressing speed-dial two. I heard the phone ring- once, twice, then.

"NYPD." A woman's voice echoed down the line.

"Hello, It's Billie, I've got some kind of smuggler here. We're at Newark Liberty International airport, outside terminal four." I listened for the reply, "Yeah, some kind of drug, Green, Bushy, I don't know I don't do drugs do I? Yeah, you're new? Oh. Hi I'm Billie, I call this line alot. I reckon I got the worst luck out for a cabbie. I must get near every criminal in New york. Well, maybe not. Look can you just put Constable Davidson on the line, tell him it's Billie. Yeah, thanks"

I shook my head and sighed, just what I needed- a newbie. This guy could wake up any second and I couldn't just keep sitting on his chest in the middle of a crowded airport. It might look strange.

* * *

Two days and several police interviews after my little smuggler adventure, (Timothy Smith, 22, 12 months prison), I picked up my next criminals.

I pulled my cab to a curb and switched my light off. I turned in my seat as two youths of about sixteen opened the door. They were both covered in blood, one had a black eye and the other a bloodied, possible broken, nose. They looked like they expected me to tell them to walk.

    I sighed.

"As long as you got money I don't care" I said over my shoulder, throwing them a cheeky smile in the rear-view mirror. They grunted and climbed into the back seat, fastening the seat belts.

"So", I said, "You gang members or robbers that got caught?", I smirked at their stunned expression and continued.

"I'm gonna guess gang fight 'cause you're not yelling at me to 'Drive', yeah I spent some time in the underworld", A lie but it made them more comfortable, "Don't worry your secret's safe with me" I grinned again and winked at the boys.

"No, used to be though, we just got into a fight with some goons over something. Why'd you think we were gang?" The one with the black eye asked.

"I didn't, joking boys, you gotta find yourselves a sense of humor" I winked and smiled at their newest expression, " I get all sorts in this cab, so tell me, what was this fight about?"

I glanced at the boys and they definitely looked more comfortable now they knew I wasn't gonna rat on them.

" A girl" said the black eyed one with a roll of his eyes. I laughed.

" It always is" I replied, trying to stifle giggles. The boys finally cracked a smile and the bloodied nosed boy continued their story.

"Well there was me, and there was John. We both liked this girl and when she said she'd go out with me, well, Johnnie didn't like that. He had his goons track us down and do this to us. We managed to get away and then we got into your cab and here we are." He smiled when he finished his story, satisfied with his storytelling abilities.

"Believe it or not, it's not the most interesting story I've heard boys, I been a cabbie for a long time" they looked slightly crestfallen that their adventure hadn't really been all that great after all. "But definitely interesting, don't get me wrong" this made them grin again and I asked- "So, this girl, Pretty is she?"

Bloodied nose looked happy to respond.

"Yeah!" he said enthusiastically, "but that's not all, she's smart too, real clever, not just just with book stuff either, she's street smart." he nodded and his friend rolled his eyes like he'd heard it before.

"So, she goes to your school?" Bloodied nose nodded.

"Yeah, we're not bad kids us two, but Johnnie- he's bad news. He's the one who in with gang stuff." I nodded and smiled.

"Take care of her then" ,I replied and both the boys nodded.

"You need to get cleaned up for your parents?" I asked as I turned into the street they'd given me. Black-eye shrugged.

"Nah, they're at some fancy-pants party. We'll be good to wash up, although I don't know what I'm going to tell them about my eye?" I frowned then smiled apologetically.

"Sorry boys, nothing I can do about that" They nodded as I parked outside a block of apartments, "Well this is it boys, nice to meet you. You ever need a cab you just call Billie" I handed them my mobile number and bloodied nose took it, smiling gratefully.

"Thanks Man" Black-eye nodded and they both exited the cab.

"We'll see you later said bloodied nose as he shut the door with a thud.

I watched their blood-stained shirts disappear into the apartment complex.

Yep, just another ordinary day in the life of a New York cabbie.
