The Road He TravelsA Poem by Cylis DerrensA man's journey in life
The Road He Travels
A virgin man finds himself feeling out of place
He feels left out in a modern world
To what does he hold to?
Is it his faith alone?
Does he cry out to God saying “fill me”?
He wants his suffering to end
Perhaps God does for a time
But the man pushes him away
He always wants more
Dreaming of a wife and children his whole life
He will settle for nothing less
While others speak of patience
He trudges on
Thus continuing his search
Uphill in the chilly snow he feels the loneliness
The wind brings doubts
Battering at his very will
At times it takes his heart
He stumbles and falls
No longer wishing to rise
Hope comes again, and he finds the strength to stand
Marching on he meets the occasional traveler
Who joins him on his journey
She smiles warming his heart greater than any sun
But in the end each companion are all doomed to leave
They have their own roads to walk and he has his
It is a long rugged road
Filled with sharp rocks in the dirt and mud that hurt his feet
Behind him is a trail of blood and tears
Marking the path of his journey
Each fork is a choice
Along with each intersection
Does he go this way or that?
Or should he stay on his original path?
Each time he tries another road he is lost
But always he heeds the siren’s call
Forever beckoning him to stray
Offering him all that lies in his heart
It leads him down another road
When it is over he is forced to backtrack
It takes awhile
The sun beats on his brow
In it he feels pressures of life weighing him down
But still he manages to push on
He is tired of searching
Tired of waiting for the dream to come true
Sometimes he would settle for less
But he remembers his earlier lessons
He remembers old pains and he hesitates
The siren’s call weakens
But it is only for a time
His curse is the hopeless romantic heart
