We tried

I wrote this the day after a debate that was well prepared but people just decided not to listen to

 

We tried

 

We tried so hard to explain

Speaking of high minded thing

We talked of a better system

Something that could help everyone

But they would not listen

Selfish was their arguments

Infinitely flawed and frustrating

We didn’t understand what went wrong

We tried to explain but they didn’t listen

We gave more pros than their cons

In the end all was lost even before it began

Their ears were closed

Their eyes shut so tightly

In the end no explanation was good enough

They would not hear it

Their ignorance, hubris, and selfishness

making them deaf.

Sad to think that they are the future of our culture

They who have come to learn

If their choice is mediocrity then I say leave them

to it.

They will fail life’s test

Interesting. This poem could actually be taken as for the betterment of the world. I suppose the issue on what is lost is quite obvious here. Generally, a good poem. It is very well-written.

Wow, I don't know what to say.

The funny things, that these words can be applied to so much. Not just a debate "of a better system," but somehow today I was able to apply it to love. Why love because "We tried to explain but they didn't listen ... In the end all was lost even before it began."
