A SoldierA Poem by Cylis DerrensA Poem about a prayer I said when I was in Iraq
A Soldier’s Prayer
Praises to you oh Lord
For to you I lift my eyes
I ask you now a simple prayer
That it might be found favorable in your eyes
I ask now not for glory and riches
Not medals or awards
But should it be your will that on the morrow I must die
That I die well and leave this world with no act of cowardice in mind
Let my body be brought home for friends and loved ones to gather round
And let my mother and sister feel no hatred of you
For to you I am bound
When others think of me let my life reflect
That I died a good honest man who faced with courage his own death
And when my mother and sister think of you
Keep from their hearts any hatred or grudge
Let my death bring them closer to you
That in their hearts you might find their love
And to you oh Lord I ask just one more thing
Let them be reunited with me in the skies above
For to you I lift my praises oh lord
And to you I lift my eyes
As your humble servant lies down to sleep
I ask that you bring him thoughts of home and desert skies
