Earth Shake

Earth Shake

A Poem by Brooke Wake
"

Sometimes we feel seismic clutter a little too closely near our souls. And we must listen to it.

"
The earth shakes
In anticipation of a land slide
As does my body shudder just
Before an arrhythmia of awakening
As the topography of normal
Threatens to bust through the plasticine crust
Of old skin

The ripping of the scab lingers long
After the original pulse of pain.

beautifully attuned. we are all so full of faultlines, and the pushing through of new earth and the re-shaping of the landscape of our souls can't happen without the quaking and breaking of the old, crusted over, exterior.

'the arrhythmia of awakening' is an amazing line

I might agree with the wise Ms. G on the use of "scab", but the central metaphor is tightly woven, and it's nicely paced. Fine stuff.

They say time heals all.....
but sometimes theres just not enough time.
I love the metaphor.

There is so much that is soooo right here. You use wonder imagery both natural and physical (land slide v. arrhtythmia, plasticine v. skin.

My only wish, the one tiny thing that would make this piece sing would be replacing the word "Scab".... I know this is a small thing, but in a piece this short, every word must be in harmony, and this one seemed perhaps too brutal....thanks for posting and viva la
