FireA Story by Chris Woestenburg
I believe that the discovery, and more importantly, the taming of fire, was the point in ancient history when apes became humans. It’s fairly common knowledge that humans are the only animals that are not afraid of fire. The difference between a “human” with and without fire is like the difference between a simple lizard and a majestic dragon.
If one were unfamiliar with fire, I would have a hard time explaining it. It’s hard to categorize in terms of matter; is it gaseous or something more? It’s hard to categorize in terms of sight; is it sharp or is it wavy? It’s hard to categorize in terms of function; does it give us warmth or does it destroy our homes, like a rampaging dragon? Fire consumes wood like we do food, burping crackles as it turns nature into charcoal and ashes. Fire heats the primitive man’s home and cooks their food. With cooked food, men were freed of the churning death of many parasites. Men were able to grow strong, strong like dragons, and dragons are very, very strong! Sure, fire can destroy entire forests and rid people of their homes, but so could a dragon. Fire is hot, but a dragon’s fire is even hotter than normal fire. Like, if you felt a dragon’s fire, you would be like, “woh, this burns me a lot more than normal fire.” I think dragon’s fire is so hot because they are mythical beasts. I had a dream once where I got to ride on a dragon, and it was so cool. It, uh, it like banked left and it was like WOOSH, then it swooped down and breathed fire! Dragons. sigh, Dragons...
