Detention. Three hours in a row, while the teacher you can’t stand is sitting right in front of you starring at you with her death glare. I could feel here big black eyes gawking at the side of my head while I turned around to see what time it is.
Big mistake.
“Ms. Aker, you’re so timid to leave I see.” I peer at her, studying her closely as she chooses what to say next. I said nothing. “Would you like to stay another hour?” My eyes widened at how vile and twisted teachers could be. They’re almost like the devil themselves.
“No ma’am, I just want to go home,” I clenched my teeth, ignoring the little tickle you get when you press to hard.
She nodded at me and a smirk plastered on her face. Ms.Beaumont rummaged through her purse of teaching supplies and pulled out a stack of papers, and walked up to the little desk I was sitting in a put four sheets in front my face.
“These are the four extra-credit papers I’m asking you to do for French homework. Do you understand?”
Damn. Now, If she would’ve told my that in French, I would’ve acted like I didn’t understand her, but she knows her students to well. Personally I think that’s a little weird. I mean seriously? Who pays attention to only one of her classes when she has plenty, but yet she only seems to know us to much. Pathetic.
I nodded and snatched the papers out of her hands. Her face hardened and I no longer saw that icky smirk plastered on it. Like that can make her mustache look any better.
I got out of my seat and started for the door.
“Oh, and Hazel?”
Why me? My moment of freedom and some thick-mustached, smelly teacher stops it? Oh, how life sucks.
“Yes, Ms.Beaumont?”
“That assignment is due first thing when you get here, and if not it’s another detention. Okay?”
I starred at the cold-hearted woman before nodding soberly. She squinted her eyes trying to look sweet, but there is nothing sweet about her.
Now this time I actually got out of the door without being interrupted by a smelly teacher or a snobby student. I couldn’t help but think about what will happen when I get home. I mean the detention was totally harmless. Although, I could get in loads of trouble from forging my parents name on the detention slip you have to get signed right after. But who am I kidding? I’ve done worse things than this, and I doubt seriously my parents are going to take this as a “punishing” matter.
“Hazel! Hazel!” Perfectly good thoughts are now ruined.
And wow, does my life suck. Can’t I just have a little luck? Of all the people I didn’t want to see right now, I turned my head and saw a nerdy-pardon-very intelligent-like girl standing their with a digital camera in her hand ready to take a picture.
“Yes, Cindy. What can I do for you?” I said annoyed, anxiously waiting to get home.
“Well, I was wondering if you’d like to help with the school newspaper?”
I laughed. She starred at me while I chuckled at her stupid offer. Me? Helping? Newspaper? Wow, people these days.
“Why in God’s name would I want to help the newspaper club?” I tried so hard to be serious, but a giggling feeling in my gut wouldn’t let me.
My laughter once again resonated through the parking lot, and she was now pissed. I continued to snicker but a smiled evilly planted across her face.
“I heard that the school’s badass needed extra-credit in order to pass one of her classes, so it was just an offering from the sympathy in the heart.” She pouted, showing all of the bitchiness installed in her deep, black heart. But who am I to judge? I’m basically talking about an ugly, nerdy version of me, so I really should shut it now.
“Don’t worry I got that all covered. See what you need to do is stay out of other business, because if you don’t bad things will start happening to that pretty, little, nerdy face of yours. And if you don’t want it to be me, leave me the hell alone. Got it?”
Cindy nodded her head slowly, as she realized what I just said. I smiled and made my way to my house, wondering how bad it’s going to be when I get home.
***
“HAZEL RHOSLYN AKER! Come here right now!”
Oh God. And that was my mothers Serious voice, and boy does she sound mad. And worse, it had to be as soon as I walked through the door. Can I at least breathe first?
I ambled towards the kitchen and there she was, tapping her foot and clicking her fingernails against the granite landscape of the island. This isn’t good for me, nor my mom, because she hates when she has to fuss at me. And that’s usually often.
“You are in deep trouble. So I suggest you sit down before I scream.” No problem with that mom. As long as I can get out of here alive. [sighs] “Number one, I’d like to discuss the detentions you’ve been getting for the last week. Care to explain, how I didn’t even know until today?” I said nothing and gawked at her clueless like I have no absolute clue what she’s talking about. She was about to say something when the front door of the house opened, she winced.
“Evan, I need you, and your friend to go to your room. You’re sister is in deep trouble.”
I turned around to see Evan and one of his hot friends with him, and they both had big smirks on their faces. Grr…a******s.
“Sure mother. Take all the time you need.” And with that they left the room, and it was once again me and my mother again. She shook her head and grabbed her nose bridge with her fingers and massaged it lightly.
“Hazel, just go to your room. I don’t feel like deeling with this right now. But all I need to tell you is that you will take the offer that Cindy Lanken gave you today, and you will get better grades. If you don’t I’m sending you to military school. Conversation closed.” Mom left the room and left me there in shock. Military school? Not if an alien came and threatened to kill me and take my body to Mars and feast on it with their friends. NEVER.
I slumped and made my way up the carpeted steps to my room, which was cautiously not available to anyone, once so ever. CAUTION and HAZEL ONLY are plastered on my door in bold, black letters.
Before I could even open the door someone gripped my wrist and started tugging on it. I turned around and Evan was quietly trying to lead me to his room. He always wants to know my business, except for when I’m sad. A*s wipe.
We were in his room and Jace-the hot friend that I referred to earlier- was sitting in a chair starring at the TV.
“What was that all about?” Evan spat. I gawked at him, and then his door. Maybe I can make an escape, despite the fact that I can barely make it through his room without tripping over rotten food or bad-smelling clothes. I said nothing. “If you don’t tell me right now I’ll -” Before he could say anything else I sprang for the door jumping over his rotten clothes, but unfortunately Jace was blocking it. God, I hate his friends so much.
“Gotcha!” he shouted grabbing my wrists making me face him once more. My life sucks completely.
“Why do you want to know so bad, Evan? It’s really none of your business,” I said struggling, trying to get out of his grip.
“Because I might be able to help you.”
I stopped waggling, and looked at him questionably. Do you think he could really do that?
“Oh yeah? How?”
He peered at me and then Jace, but I really didn’t want to know what they were thinking about. I winced at their vile grins. S**t.
“If you clean my room, and clean my car I can get you out of the whole military school crap. Deal?”
“Wait. How did you know about that anyway?”
“Well, I thought maybe asking you would help you more, but what the hell? I might as well just tell you the truth.”
Oh, great. So my brother can get me out of the military school situation?
“So how are you expecting to do this?”
“Eh, I’ll tell mom that I couldn’t possibly survive living in this house without my darling sister. But then again that is true. You know how mom gets when the house isn’t clean? Well, yeah when she fusses at least she won’t blame everything on me. So what do you say?”
I didn’t believe this would work, but then again I did use that a few years ago and it worked.
Flashback:
“Mom! You can’t send Evan away to live with Aunty Kim! I can’t survive school without him! Remember how he taught me how to use percentages and decimals. There’s no way I can go through school alone without him telling me ans- how to do it.”
Yeah, I know lame excuse but I looked so sad when I said it. I could see her face soften, as I made tears appear in my eyes.
She nodded solemnly, and Evan got to stay.
End of Flashback
“You might want to use something a little more cleaver.”
I squinted my eyes, as he thought it over. Evan shrugged.
“When the time comes I’ll think about it.”
“Oh wait. About that room cleaning thing. I’m not doing that hun, sorry. But I’ll clean your car.”
He pondered it and then his lip curled. He nodded stiffly and I smirked. Mission Accomplished.
I sighed and started walking to my brother’s door, when Jace stopped me. Again.
“Looks like we are going to be spending time together,” Jace said.
“Oh really? Where?”
“Newspaper club. I have to go there to because my grades are low.” He smiled.
I chuckled silently, but he could sense humor in my eyes.
“If you actually think I’m going to Nerd club, then you’re honestly insane.”
He frowned and moved out of the door way. I left the room and headed for my room where my life practically is. Everything is in here. From my favorite Chuck Taylors all the way to my favorite band posters, which was Boys like Girls and the All American Rejects.
So I entered my room, and closed my curtains, so that no light from the setting sun shone through the window and into my room. I always wanted my room to be dark, because I think it gives off a creepy effect, which makes no one want to come in. Excellent.
I grabbed my Mac Pro and placed it in my lap as I cautiously put my iPod on the dock so my favorite music could blast through the room. Kid Cudi’s lyrics filled the room, while I logged into AIM searching for online friends.
I saw Evelyn was online, but before I could even click her username a window popped up.
