War

War

A Poem by Alice Miller
"

"A song about the wars both outside and inside your head"

"
Verse:

We walk on tumultuous ground

Sinking into silence

And no one’s patience is infinite

Nor is any kindness

You stand close beside me

Unraveling my metaphors

Dancing around the truth

And staying home from fighting wars

Prechorus:

You live with chapters and volumes of the nothing that I let you hear

But with the two of us there's no room for my honesty

And nothing keeps you here

Chorus:

But if you went to war

And your absence took your place

Not another look of hope

Would ever dare to cross my face

And if you went to war

And I lost you for real

Then there would finally be space for all that I feel

For you

Verse:

I hate handing you my issues

But you can give me yours, dear

I hate facing myself

Instead I’ll face your worst fears

You stand close beside me

Asking questions with no answers

You hate skirting around the truths I can't speak

But darling, aren't we marvelous dancers

Prechorus:

Don't go

Just cause I can't say the things I know you know I know

Can we

Live in this quiet understanding that hurts only less than watching you leave

Chorus:

But if you went to war

And your absence took your place

I could never sleep at night

Never see the light of day

And if you went to war

And I lost you for real

Then there would finally be space for all the things that I feel

For you

Bridge:

But maybe I love you is a home

Maybe my secrets are a house

That we could hide away in and decorate

And live in and love in out loud

Maybe I love you unafraid

Maybe you stay here in this place

Maybe there's room for two and I love you

And strength in the face of change

We walk on tumultuous ground

Sinking into silence

And I'm so scared of running out of time with you

But what if we're timeless

Chorus:

But if you went to war

And your absence took your place

Not another look of hope

Would ever dare to cross my face

And if you went to war

And I ever lost you for real

There would finally be space for all the things that I feel

But if you went to war

And your absence screamed your name

I'd rather be our downfall

At least you're still well if you run away

And if you ever went to war

If I lost you for real

I would stop breathing at the permanence of leaving

So I guess I have to tell you how I feel
