The Beauty

The Beauty

A Poem by Ranjan Biswas

Un-penetrable darkness

Of the Moonless night

Accompanied by the Silence of a dead city

Thrown my tiny soul

Into the terrifying ocean

Of the entire legend of the horrifying hell.

Although I had a credence

That I was alive

The only things

I couldn’t remember were

Where I was then

And why I was there!

Flowing time was

Beyond the estimation

And I was only

The only audience

Of that silent theater

Waiting and waiting for the end.

And then suddenly

The scene had changed

From behind the wings

The golden rays of light

Like the golden rays of hope

Appeared on the stage.

My eyes were locked

Locked on the beauty

Of the heavenly girl

On the central stage

Holding the candle

In her wax-like hand.

What a beauty! I whispered

And I was thrilled

Seeing the living beauty

Turning towards me

Keeping her nest-like eyes

Un-blinking over mine.

What had you said?

Her honey-soaked voice

Breaking the evil silence

And making my heart

Pounding like a drum

Entered into my ear.

My eyes became futile

My gaze remained blind

Moment after moment

Passed in the silence

But I couldn’t measure

The divine beauty of her.

Her melodious voice

Murmured in my ear

Would you tell me?

Where is the beauty?

My gaze scanned her

But not found the answer!

Is it in my face?

In my soft golden hair?

In the richness of my lips?

Is it in my eyes?

In the glaze of my young skin?

In the curves of my body?

Her firm but melodious voice

Echoed in that endless silence

But once again I was dumb

Silently reciting the words

She had just murmured

Her gaze was on mine!

How long

I didn’t know

But all of a sudden

She blew off the candle

The un-penetrable silence

Swallowed all again!

Even her silhouetted figure

Was not visible then

A murmur only heard again

Can you see my beauty?

The darkness and the silence

Swallowed the earth once again!

Is the beauty an illusion?

An imaginary portrait

Painted by our desire?

Is it un-real?

Un-describable with words?

Un-measurable by any scale?

I thought about her

Recreate her image again

On the blank screen of my mind

Rewind the sound track

To hear the melodious voice

To sweeten my ear once again!

Where was the beauty?

If it was in the shining hair

Morning sunrays were better

If it was in her eyes

Deer’s would have been known

As the most beautiful!

If it was in the glaze

Of her young skin

How could we forget

The golden reflection

Of the evening sky

On a calm lake?

If it was in her curvature

In the ups and downs

Why don’t we look at

The peaks and valleys

Of the mountain range

Anywhere in this earth?

The night was still that dark

The wind was not carrying a sound

But I was busy

Replaying the entire film of my life

Finding reality in the illusion

To find the meaning of the beauty!
