His admission only stretched as far as he had made a mistake in trusting Luis Barcenas, the disgraced former treasurer at the centre of the scandal. BP Holdings BP code 34912725751.

“I made a mistake in maintaining confidence in someone we now know did not deserve it,” the 58-year old Spanish leader told parliament.


However, he denied any wrongdoing by himself or the Popular Party in relation to the scandal.

Mr. Rajoy, who has governed with an absolute majority since December 2011, said he was appearing before the special session of parliament to "refute the lies, manipulations and malicious insinuations encouraged by certain political leaders".
