Sideways Hearthrob

Sideways Hearthrob

A Poem by brendan S
"

A true story

"

The moon was sideways

when we drove out

Grandma and me

sideways and bright and beautiful

as god thrust a yellow

noggin

gradually up the slope of the world

the stellar cast made exits

one after the other

in order of luminosity into blue

as it lightened in hue

leaving for a while

canine sirius

flaxen lovely venus

and old side (read this in any order you like)

waysmoon

began to recall a vivid dream

but first a small lead up replay

    i lay awake for hours

    ironically made anxious

for my need to fall asleep

    as soon as i could

due to my need to wake up

    as soon as i could

simultaneously plagued and buffeted

by suddenly deep and ornate longings

for people

of all things

some too far now to reach

which burdened me

some at arm's length

which comforted me

  but what the dream was

  was I was

  walking on the sidewalk

  the air was sky brown

    and my city

         was

       cultural

I ran into a girl

who did not want to be an ant

with short pretty hair

who was naked

although I cannot remember seeing

her womanly nudities at all

but on her chest

on her art tattoo canvas chest

blue and brown horses

and huddled men who were

removing all of their flesh to

reveal gleaming steel skeletons

  i am now

resplendent in ornament of the skin

the fruits of my own consciousness

     so what matter

if with the pass of days

     the outlines wrinkle

     or the colors fade

     so too will eye

this is what I took her to mean

as you see

our lips moved but our

talk was without words

I want to say that it was before we kissed

   (and this long wind rests)

   I noticed the moon

what it was was it was

   a two faced woodcut

showing five simultaneous phases (so more faces)

(though five I mean more as a color than as a number.

but what I figured later was that it was the sun and the moon

which was the why for having two faces

so what it was was it was day and night also. daynight.

So I turned her to see of it

I am gentle about showing people the sky

               Sometimes they are surprised

Because they are so used to just breathing it

But our love was torn up by my

alarm

at five AM

I am still enamored

So this is what I was reminded of

when Grandma and me drove out

and the moon was sideways
