Summertime Sadness

Summertime Sadness

A Poem by Carly Holtzman

When lovers quarrel, the earth shatters,

Explosions in the sky,

Echoing her heartbreak,

Alone in a dark room,

A body on the floor.

Lazy afternoons in mid-July,

Resisting the urge to run,

Away from her problems,

Away from the bleeding.

Her dreams are larger than her despair,

but her fears may be stronger,

A fear of love, and omen of her past,

Shaking in the rain,

Crying out for help, for

someone’s arms to stop the seizing,

A friend,

The body on the floor, in a state of

Vulnerability, as you watch their soft,

Snores, a July siesta.
