Then There Was Nothing

Then There Was Nothing

A Poem by Carly Holtzman

Minutes ago she was swaying, pumping her fist, in unity with strangers, surrounding her in a hot sweaty crowd. She could only see glitter and lights.

The fire in her chest spread to her brain, popping molecules throughout her body like one dart setting off a chain reaction of exploding balloons.

Her legs and arms started to vibrate. She gained control, until she didn’t.

Then there was nothing.

A complete nothingness enclosed around her. Silence, and darkness, until the siren came through. She heard her name being called and could feel the ground under her back.

But she wanted to stay in the silence, like the soundest sleep you could imagine, ruined by an alarm clock.

She stood and was flying.

Then there was nothing.

“Move!”, there’s shrieking with urgency. Something’s wrong.

Then she realizes she’s in motion. Strong arms were wrapped around her, arms of an angel and he was running.

The siren kept calling to her, begging for her to lift up from the darkness. She rubbed his angel wings between her fingers, the silky feathers slipping across her thumb, a smile creeping on her face.

Before she knew it, she was strapped down, a needle in her hand, tears running down her flushed cheeks, sparkles plastered to her chest, scared, and alone.

Then there was nothing.
