The Leaves of Autumn

The Leaves of Autumn

A Poem by Mike Davies

Something happens that we fail to see
the Sun rising a little later
than usual
or the temperature drops
a breeze blows in
it begins to get colder
a cycle commences
and a lever is pulled
the season’s wild expansion
is halted and much
of the lifeforce
retreats back to the dark
rootballs in the soil
the leaves of Autumn enter
into deep conversation with the world
calling out to all those that remain
this is their time, the giving
of their selves
to a greater harmonic threshold
their stems become wicks
and they burst
into flame, burning
with a breathless
disintegrating fervour
until something
snaps free
and they too are released
falling as sparks
into that boundlessly
infinite, annhilation of space
