Mending the Fence

Mending the Fence

A Poem by Crystal L. Test

I knew it needed to be done

Always looming in the distance

Harboring in the back of my mind

I wasn't looking forward to the task

I had blinders on

And told myself that it wasn't so bad

It wasn't as worn

As I had feared

But it became evident that I was wrong

A stone-cold slap in the face

It would require much effort

And even humility on my part

Admitting that it needed work

Was difficult enough

But I actually needed to do something about it

As I checked the damage

I found it was very weathered

Beaten up by the harsh elements

But the posts and framework remained intact

It was worth saving

And not beyond repair

So, I bought new wood and nails

Slowly and steadily I removed

The damage of the past

As I replaced the decay

Clarity came by to review my handywork

She stared down the fence

No longer in shambles but once again whole

She mused aloud that the fence is different

A mixture of old and new boards

White-washing, alone, would've just covered

All of the imperfections and dry-rot

But, she was glad that I took the time

And picked just the right moment

To rebuild it correctly

For now, it will have the strength

To stand the test of time

Crystal where have you been= I am so glad to see you online here. I missed you!
Pls stay.

now this was beautiful reconciliation with the inner instance not only with the other person, poetically raised and and emptying the heavy heart. I loved your "A mixture of old and new boards

White-washing, alone, would've just covered

All of the imperfections and dry-rot" ------------I love such inverted metaphors. How I missed your text..

This reminds me very much of Frost's "Mending Wall".

"Good fences make good neighbors". But how do fences/walls, help relationships? Are they needed to some degree?

I really enjoyed this poem.

Mending the fences can be a tricky project indeed, we must carefully restore them with faith and love... I really loved you comparison of a fence and relationships, you crafted this like a true handywoman.

A poignant composition of reconciliation and renewing of a relationship through forgiveness. And, to come out of this tribulation stronger than before, is the icing of the cake!

Exquisitely penned!

a beautiful piece really. I love the way your words seem to flow like the mending of a relationship. I thought your imagery and word choice were inspired! And were really amazing.

An absolute beautiful analogy of mending a relationship. I can't think of anything more beautiful than this. It is so nice not to have this hanging over our heads...Well done...It's crazy how we can reason away making things right between us and another. That's why so many people struggle with bitterness and unforgiveness-and have health issues related to it. I have even heard that it can cause arthritis...and pride is such a stumbling block to doing the right thing...Getting ready to do a teaching on unforgiveness. Wouldn't you know it, it is the very thing I am being tested on. :-) Great job, Crystal! ~Carole~
