History of Hair - prompt Ravin ink - carl - missouri

A Poem by carl
"

truth be told

"

Curly and blond

at age three

standing with dad

near Hawaiian banana tree.

Mom favored a side part

trim round the ears

with high front wave

and no pomade.

Much the same till thirteen

duck tail and Pompadour

styled by Grandma

every day out the door.

Not much else till USAF

boot camp cut the mane

four years following

it stayed that same.

Fit right in with the job

after discharge and work

machine repair man

looking like a jerk.

Entered hippy culture

digging Paul Butterfield

Hair the Musical

Janis Joplin the Stones

Quit my job going

college on Vet Bill

let my freak flag fly

while digging CSNY

Almost Cut My Hair Today

but like them I refused

added full beard

and full blown Afro.

Became committed

Jesus freak joined the church

became English teacher

part returned sans beard.

After twenty plus years

retired regrew the beard

hair swings ponytail to Afro

turned white for both.

Presently suffers loss

loves hats till April

became unimportant

like everything nothing lasts.

Very interesting history of one man's hair. When I was young, men's hair was either very short or relatively short, and the only facial hair seen was a mustache. Then came the 60's and anything went. Today both my hair and beard are relatively short and white as the arctic. I won't complain; at least they're still there.

Such a creative biography. I have naturally, curly hair too and understand the necessity of hats. Thanks for sharing. I feel like I know much more about you. Wonderful write.

The evolution of a person writ in one's hair. A poem of change yet still the same. The only thing constant is change they say. A wonderful write personal but yet so applicable to all, not only people but things in general. You can never go home again but you are always there. A most wonderful write Carl.

It is amazing how our hair defines parts of our lives.
I went years not getting haircuts from about age 7 to 15 because i detested the vibrations from the hair trimmer at the barbers. My hair grew in a lazy afro type way and because it was curly it just bunched up round my head but when wet would be most way down my back.
Then i started colouring it bright green, bright red etc and looked like a hippie clown on acid, but that all chsnged when i joined the army cadets and i remember no one at school recognising me with my new buzz cut and even my best friends warned me im in tge wrong seat at class because that was Lorry's seat! 😀
Now all these years later its went from black to grey at tge sides with a look of having painted a ceiling elsewhere on my head, but ive kept it short all these years and sigh every time i look in a mirror at how thin its become, where once it looked like a crash helmet round my head.
But at least i learned to cut my own hair in lockdown thanks to youtube and now cut my hair weekly when the sides dare to grow from a no.1 cut to a no.2, leaving me feeling like an unkempt hippie once again! 😀
There was an old chinese lady who got replaced by a vending machine who thought she ran tge entire army when in fact she was in charge of the canteen, who used to scream arlt everyone to get their haircut no matter the length of hair.
She set the fear going in everyone and could have ended all wars if she were unleashed on the enemy. Sadly though she wasnt, but it would have beem great to see her scream at the enemy and shame them about the length of their hair, as she balanced her beehive haircut on her head! 😀
