Trains in the Night

Trains in the Night

A Poem by carl
"

have moved from a small quiet rural town to the city and one of the few things I like about it is the sound of the trains at night for some unknown reason bring me comfort and an odd sense of relief.

"

Trains in the Night:

Rising slowly from sleep distinct mellow tones manifest

through window shades awash in urban street lamp glow

like splashed phantom patterns dressed in garish graffiti

to track on walls and bedroom ceiling.

Belying rough exteriors with soothingly soft choral voices

a serene messages reaches across nighttime landscapes

falling on linen sheets and downy pillows with purpose

to mitigate dreaded senile fever dreams.

I did the same thing years ago, moved to near the elevated train.
First it's annoying, then it blends, then it's comforting, and I don't know why, and I'm grateful for it :)

I went in the other direction Carl, from city to rural countryside, but I totally get why and I miss that sound too. I used to listen to them in the distance and found comfort in their rhythmic lull.
It is a very warm and conforting sound, perhaps in letting us know that the world still spins as we sleep.
I remember when I first moved here and the sounds from vert nearby forest and not so near farms freaked me out far more than the mechanical bull of a train passing through.
For the first week I thought I'd moved to a place in the twilight zone called wtf was that!"
