The Jay

Watching with questioning eye

he sat so very close above

silhouetted cleanly and clearly

against afternoon August sky

While I stood silently beneath

shaking from a Roy Rogers

Hopalong Cassidy Saturday

packing a birthday Red Rider

With overflowing eyes i see

what so easily done now lies

dishonored in summer’s dust

spirit blue virgin white and still.

Makes me think of an incident from my past. I had a bb gun and used it on a small bird I saw on a tree branch. Looking at the feathered form crumpled in the dust, I felt remorse. One of the lessons of youth, I guess.

dear Carl... I grew up with Roy Rogers and Hop along Cassidy. When my daughter was about Five, we stopped at a Roy Rogers for a meal... and outside was the Real in Person Roy Rogers with his latest version of the Pioneers... they were singing the Oldies acapella and we were blessed forevermore. Happy Trails to you until we Meet again. gently, Pat

this is a very interesting memory. i did not understand at first, but the comments below gave me a little hint. man's innate desire to hunt meets man's conscience. the interplay between the two halves of our soul was explored in this subtle piece. it is sombre but full of personality.
