The Soul's SongA Poem by C. RosePantoum Form PoetryEach soul has a song that plays our inception An aria of our heart planted in the mother A hymn for our journey pulsing in our gravity Carving our lithic path, the soul pounds its drum Inculcated in our steps, counting down our cessation The prompt for this piece is based on a story that I recently heard about a tribal village and its connection to music. Each time a woman is with child she and the other women from the village go outside the village and sit in nature. They meditate as a group until they each hear and recite the same song. This is known as the child’s soul song from that moment on and throughout their life, when having pinnacle moments or even when they do harm the village gathers around them and sings their song. Each member of the tribe has a completely different sounding song and its even sung to them on their deathbed. Seemed so poetic to me, I had to figure out a way to put my words to it. This piece also written in Pantoum Form for dVerse Poets Pub Form For All hosted by the lovely Gay Cannon So Pantoum…wow nice challenge. Admittedly I played with the rhyme scheme and abandoned the abab using some past research I had done into this form allowing an alternative of a abab bcbc cdcd etc etc style. All else should be tucked into place. Thank you for hosting us again this week Gay, really love the challenge of form poetry and look forward to more. © 2011 C. Rose |
