A letter to Tomorrow

A letter to Tomorrow

A Poem by Violet Chan

I see a shadow
Shadow of tomorrow
Do you know how it looks?
Scary.
The way you are nearing me
Really scary.
As everything that I wanted and protected
Starts to collapse..

Do you know how hard I tried
And treasured them all?
I screamed a thousand times,
I dripped every single drop of my blood,
I tried as hard as I could,
I even survived in a house
Filled with fire flames.

Why? why? why!?
Can't you see how see how i'm suffering?
Can't you see?
Your shadow itself is just killing me..
How you make me remember
Those ridiculous yet sensible thoughts
Which is tearing my heart
As I try hard not to let it go apart.

Ah! I can hear a voice,
voice of tomorrow
Do you know how it sounds?
Unpleasant.
Why..? why..? why.. !?
Will I only bring shame
To those who loves me?
To those who think i'm only worth
For competitions and commercials?

No! Stop! I don't want the truth..
I was always prepared to meet you
And always made you happy
Still why..?
Even if you near me...
I plead you not to touch me,
Please... Please... Please...

What tomorrow may bring can be a terrifying thing, especially if the present hasn't bring much hope. I love how you personified "tomorrow" as a shadow, always following but never touching, remaining intangible. One of my favorite parts were in the beginning where you wrote:

"Do you know how it looks?
Scary.
The way you are nearing me
Really scary."

It really understates how the speaker perceives this fear and brings some human, colloquial language to the poem. The progressive fear that starts to control the speaker's mind conveys the reality of a broken world, filled with apprehension of what another day could bring. A fear many people have...

Wonderful work, Violet chan!
