How quickly they grow

How quickly they grow

A Poem by Barry S. Maltese

How quickly they grow -right before our eyes
So subtle that we don't realize
till one day in a very special light
we somehow witness an amazing sight.
Maybe it was tough for us to behold
maybe our hearts refused to be told
that the little one is not little anymore
and is living a life with so much in store

Now, our role must magically change
some things we must do might feel quite strange
but we must understand they too also have a need -
to stretch their wings to a dream they must heed
So, time has evolved and so must we
and know just how much we SHOULD set free
for we want them to reach the top of life's stairs
where a similar problem will then beome theirs

Wow.. this one made me tear up. My daughter just graduated from high school in June and will be going to college in the fall. I was a weeping mess for a month before graduation.

Those lines hit me straight in my heart.

I applaude you on another amazing write. It was an honor to read this and feel what it means.. thank you so much for sharing :)

Oh you said it...it is subtle, but you turn around and they are young adults. So true and a sort bittersweet feeling. i like your last line... nicely done...

Such a true poem and i wrote one similar on how quickly they grow and soon they are young men and women walking out our door.
It is somewhat sad but an accomplishment and we have to let them go .. this is touching.
