How to Learn from Things You Cannot Unlearn Willfully Using Things You are Obliged to Learn

A Poem by Oydrin

How to learn from things

you cannot unlearn willfully

using things you are obliged to learn:

ONE:

We are currently leaving the realm of logic

and venturing into the realm of the heart,

The heart is a clumsy animal often guilty of gross negligence,

particularly lack of foresight, and definitely lack of skill

Lack of skill in handling the things it ventures into

And the heart is at its most irresponsible when it is free

Your heart, your liability

TWO:

Love is a mercantile thing

with mutual consent as its cause,

and affection as its consideration

subject to the limits of availability;

Meaning to say that

just because the object of the heart’s affection

is single doesn’t mean it is also available;

Keep in mind that

there is such a thing as constructive delivery.

If they say “SOLD,” walk away immediately

THREE:

When walking away, don’t look back.

Instead move prospectively.

Retroactivity only applies when favorable to the accused,

Which happens to be your heart,

Which happens to be guilty;

Retroactivity convicts you twice over,

So get over it!

FOUR:

If you happen to belong to the queer side of the spectrum,

and are often left out on love poems like these,

know the distinction between mala prohibita and mala in se.

From there, understand that there is

nothing inherently wrong with the way you love;

You just happen to live in a society

where norms and human nature

are inclined to think otherwise.

FIVE:

If you find the object of your affection

in the arms of someone you can only envy,

and you somehow begin to resent them both unreasonably,

Congratulations!

You just learned about damnum absque injuria -

 damage without injury.

SIX:

Stop analyzing the way you feel in your current situation.

It is impractical and foolish

to digest a case

that has not yet been ruled upon; but

SEVEN:

Number six, is easier said than done.

EIGHT:

If you find yourself in a heartbreaking situation,

and you think there is nothing you can do,

Compose a song and sing it,

even if you think it sucks;

write a letter even if you know you’re never going to send it;

or maybe

Resort to poetry…

Because you cannot sue someone

for taking your breath away;

stealing your heart;

and breaking it subsequently

But you sure can sue them

if they steal your intellectual property

NINE:

The heart is not governed by equity.

Tip the scales in your favor and

NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR IT

TEN:

It is still true.

The heart is a clumsy animal

often guilty of gross negligence,

particularly lack of foresight,

and definitely lack of skill

Your heart, your liability

But remember

that even the most despicable people and things

have some beautiful facets

That probably means,

you can always turn

your heartbreaks into assets.
